“Fear of a name is more than fear of the thing itself.” (Albus Dumbledore)

Anxiety can affect many areas of life—from work, relationships and parenting to health, sleep and everyday decisions. At CALM, we provide assessment, psychotherapy, psychiatric care and coaching for adults experiencing anxiety, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

We begin by understanding what you are experiencing, how it is affecting your life and what you would like to change. Together, we determine which service—or combination of services—is most appropriate for you.

Assessment

Treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment of your current concerns, relevant history, symptoms, relationships, health, work and life circumstances.

When helpful, and only with your knowledge and consent, we may also speak with a partner, family member, physician or another professional involved in your care. Following the assessment, we will recommend a personalized treatment plan based on your needs, preferences and goals.

Psychotherapy

Our psychotherapy is evidence-based, individualized and grounded in a genuine understanding of each person and their life.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) forms the foundation of our approach because it is one of the most extensively studied and effective treatments for anxiety. Depending on your needs, therapy may help you:

  • Recognize and change patterns of thinking and behaviour that keep anxiety going

  • Gradually approach situations, thoughts or feelings that anxiety has led you to avoid

  • Relate differently to difficult thoughts and emotions

  • Understand how past experiences and relationships continue to affect you

  • Make choices guided by your values rather than by fear

  • And more...

Our clinicians also draw from psychodynamic psychotherapy and newer evidence-based approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness and compassion-focused therapy.

Specialized Treatment

We provide treatments tailored to particular anxiety-related conditions, including:

·  Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD; and

·  Prolonged Exposure (PE), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for PTSD and trauma-related difficulties.

Individual and Group Therapy

Individual therapy offers private, personalized treatment focused on your particular needs and goals.

Group therapy provides structured treatment alongside others facing similar challenges, creating opportunities for shared learning, connection, and mutual support.

The length of individual treatment varies according to each young person’s needs. CBT is generally time-limited and often lasts 4 to 12 months. Some clients return for occasional booster sessions, and they are always welcome to do so.

Group therapy consists of a predetermined number of sessions, typically ranging from 8 to 16, depending on the type of group.

Life Management and Coaching

Not every difficulty is best understood as a mental health disorder. Anxiety can also arise around major decisions, competing responsibilities, career changes, relationships, parenting, relocation, retirement, loss or uncertainty about the next stage of life.

Coaching provides practical, future-focused support to help you clarify priorities, identify obstacles, make considered decisions and turn intentions into achievable steps.

When clinically significant anxiety, trauma or deeper emotional patterns are central to the difficulty, psychotherapy is usually more appropriate. We can help you determine which type of support best fits your needs.

Psychiatric Services

Our comprehensive psychiatric assessment provides an in-depth understanding of your mental health difficulties within the broader context of your development, physical health, family, relationships, work and life circumstances.

Following the assessment, the psychiatrist will provide:

  • A clear psychiatric diagnosis, where applicable

  • A comprehensive biological, psychological and social formulation that brings together the factors contributing to your difficulties; and

  • Personalized recommendations, which may include medication, psychotherapy or other appropriate interventions.

The referring physician or nurse practitioner will receive a detailed professional consultation note. You will also receive a clear written summary of the diagnosis, formulation and recommendations, so that you understand the conclusions of the assessment and the suggested next steps.

Medication Treatment and Follow-Up

When medication is recommended, psychiatric follow-up may be available to monitor its effectiveness, address side effects and make adjustments when needed.

Medication is considered within your broader treatment plan and may be offered on its own or alongside psychotherapy and other interventions.
